The Spokane Symphony is offering a series of interactive adult classes. The four-session Monday night classes, presented by Spokane Symphony Education Director Randy Fisher begin on Oct. 2 at Ella's Supper Club at Centerstage.
According to Fisher, the classes include Everything you always wanted to ask about music - but didn't know you already knew!!
Here's the chance to ask your questions and not just for an answer, but for an exploration. Symphony 101 brings context to build around what you already know about music! It isn't your grandfather's Music Appreciation class; this is a proactive, interactive romp from violins to contrabassoons (you'll get to play them, too)! You won't get your French and English horns confused any longer, said Fisher.
Each 4-session series focuses on a Spokane Symphony concert in October, January and March. Every series will feature a variety of presenters musicians, conductors, professors and surprise guests. There's always music some live, some recorded, some video. The dessert chef at Ella's will create an offering that will spark continued discussion at the reception following each session. The maestros will drop by to participate.
The final session of each series hosts participants at a Symphony rehearsal. Participant will meet before, listen for a while and have a discussion.
Three distinct series, each consisting of three Monday s, 7-9 p.m., plus a Wednesday evening Hosted Open Rehearsal.
Fall Series (Oct. 2, 9, 16, 18)
It starts with the violin. Why was Stradivarius such a big deal, anyway? And how in the world do you choose a Concertmaster? Or audition for the chorus? And you get a Brahms T-Shirt, to boot!
Winter Series (Jan. 8, 15, 22, 24)
Join us for Berlioz and brass, Gershwin's piano rolls and a little saxophone.
Spring Series (March 5, 12, 19, 21)
This series features the tremendous Spokane resource of The Moldenhauer Collection, a touch of klezmer, and there's so much more to the bassoon than sweeping up after the Sorcerer's Apprentice!
Tickets are $60 for the four session series. If you Bring a Friend, the cost is $50 each. Registration for all three series is $150. The Bring a Friend option provides all three series for $125 each. (Miss a session, get credit for a session in another series.)
