Brandi Carlile headlines Symphony Spring Special

Apr 15, 2009

For Immediate Release

Contact: Annie Matlow 464-7071

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile will bring a new sound to the Spokane Symphony on April 23 at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. The up and coming artist will showcase her unique blend of alternative pop and blues while accompanied by Symphony musicians led by Resident Conductor Morihiko Nakahara. Singer-songwriter Katie Herzig, will open the show.

Carlile was listed as one of “10 artists to watch in 2005” by Rolling Stone magazine. Her music has been featured on the soundtrack of the hit ABC show “Grey’s Anatomy.” She has made several appearances on TV including performances on “The Tonight Show”with Jay Leno and “The Late Show with Conan O’Brien.” Carlile has performed with a variety of musical artists including The Fray, Maroon 5, Tori Amos, Ray LaMontagne, Johnny Lang, The Indigo Girls, Chris Isaak, and Shawn Colvin. She was recently featured in a sold out performance with the Seattle Symphony.

The Ravensdale, Washington. native first started songwriting at the age of 17 and got her professional start playing clubs in the Seattle area. While exploring the Seattle music scene, Carlile met guitarists Tim and Phil Hanseroth with whom she decided to form a band. Together they have been touring almost nonstop for the last four years. In 2005, Carlile signed on with Columbia Records and has since released two albums under the label to wide acclaim. A third studio album is set to be released later this year.

Herzig left Colorado for Nashville and immediately started to catch the attention of other artists, and several of her compositions have been used in movies. Her song "Heaven's My Home" received a 2007 Grammy nomination for best country performance by The Duhks. Most recently, she has been receiving rave reviews for her new album Apple Tree. PASTE Magazine recently included Katie Herzig in their "Best of What's Next - 25 Artists to Ignore at Your Own Peril" roundup, and said that Apple Tree, "pushes her now-signature style - brightly textured acoustic pop that's clever yet sincere, sunny but grounded - to exquisite new heights. It's Herzig's most accomplished work to date." Performing Songwriter magazine adds, "Katie Herzig is quickly becoming a treasured female artist. This album boasts beautifully and thoughtfully crafted songs and, most strikingly, Herzig's endearing vocals."

Carlile's performance with the Spokane Symphony will take place at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox on Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. Carlile will perform the first half of the concert without the Spokane Symphony, which will join her for the second half. The program will include the songs “Turpentine,” “Fall Apart Again” and “The Story” which was featured on a commercial for General Motors during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Samples of these songs can be heard at http://www.brandicarlile.com/music
