The Spokane Symphony Presents Pink Martini Back By Popular Demand

Oct 30, 2008

For Immediate Release

Contact: Annie Matlow 326-3136

The Spokane Symphony is proud to bring back Pink Martini, performing on Saturday, June 27 at 8pm at The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.  Pink Martini has had three previous performances in Spokane, the last in 2004, creating a huge fan base for this outstanding group.  Hot off performances at Carnegie Hall, the Cannes Film Festival and LA’s Disney Hall, this 12-piece ensemble from Portland, Oregon is known for their eclectic repertoire that includes everything from Latin jazz and Afro Cuban rumba to sultry cabaret.

Self-described as musical archaeologists, Pink Martini brings melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create a purely modern sound.  Founded in 1994 by Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale, Pink Martini was later joined by lead singer China Forbes to create the successful combination that attracts an audience that includes everyone from grade-schoolers to grandmothers to the young and hip and beautiful.

Their two self-produced albums Sympathique and Hang on Little Tomato have collectively sold over 1.3 million records worldwide with their latest album released in May of 2007 entitled Hey Eugene garnering rave reviews and enjoying a triumphant debut on Amazon's bestseller list at No. 1.

“To be more specific, the recipe for a Pink Martini would read something like this: One part French chanson, one part Argentine tango, one part soft merengue beat, and a dash of gin-joint jazz. Combine ingredients and shake vigorously over old Hollywood glamour. Pour into a glass and garnish with a paper parasol.” –The Boston Globe

“No matter how Pink Martini get described, there’s always an element being overlooked, a reliance on phrases such as lounge, cosmopolitan rumba or neo-classical that only tells part of this rich story.  Impressive at every musician’s station, this ensemble produces music that is charming and elegant…” –Variety
