SPOKANE Family fun as long been associated with the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, and on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 the Spokane Symphony will continue this tradition with its Fantastic Family Fun Concert. Associate Conductor Morihiko Nakahara will host ensembles of Spokane Symphony musicians. The event includes a variety of pre-concert activities designed to amuse, delight and enrich kids.
The concert, which begins a 2 p.m., will introduce the members of the instrument families The Strings, the Woodwinds, The Brass, and The Percussion with light-hearted and informative performances by the Spokane Symphony ensembles. The concert will begin with the Strings playing the Stradivari family in Italy, who are having difficulties choosing which piece to play in the upcoming Italian Idol contest. Young audience members will be able to assist the Stradivari family to select their entry for the show. The concert will conclude with an invigorating presentation by the Percussion ensemble. Attending children will be encouraged to playing along on the simple percussion instruments they made during the pre-concert events in lobby.
Beginning at 1 p.m., there will be a wide variety of Pre-concert activities in the lobby of the Theater, hosted by the Symphony and other community organizations. Kids will be able to bang, pluck, buzz and blow on an extensive selection of real instruments in our largest instrument petting zoo of the year. Mobius Kids will offer centers where children can make their own simple percussion instrument or make a colorful rendition of Art Deco designs. The Spokane Public Library will do a display of children's books on music, and an exhibit of historic photos of Spokane Indian tribe, promoting a family concert on May 18, 2008, featuring students from Wellpinit schools. The Northwest Museum of Art and Culture will also have a display of books on the local Native American culture that developed along the rivers.
In addition, there will be two musical presentations in the lobby. The first, Music and Movement, will lead children in rhythmic movement to music. This will be followed by a performance by Zingamarimba, a marimba ensemble from Whitman Elementary. Children will be invited to play along with the instruments they've made at the Mobius Kids center.
